ROAD CONDITIONS MAY 2017

 

WE HAVE HAD A LOT OF RAIN THIS SEASON SO FAR, WE HAVE HAD A LITTLE OVER 1000 MM SINCE NOVEMBER 2016

 

THE ROADS ARE STILL WET, MUDDY IN PLACES. SOME PLACES ARE STILL IMPASSABLE.

THE CENTRAL KALAHARI GAME RESERVE IS NOW DRY, BUT THE ROADS ARE VERY BUMPY AND RUTTED. THE BUSH IS QUITE DENSE AND THE GRASS LONG. CHECK YOUR RADIATORS FOR GRASS SEEDS.

NXAI PAN AND MAKGADIKGADI NATIONAL PARKS ARE ALSO DRYING OUT NICELY. THE ROADS ALSO RUTTED AND BUMPY.

MOREMI GAME RESERVE IS STILL WET AND HAS A LOT OF STANDING WATER IN AREAS. 3RD BRIDGE AREA STILL HAS A LOT OF WATER, THE RIVERS ARE HIGH. THEY ARE STILL REPAIRING THE BRIDGE. THEY ARE LOOKING AT MAKING A TEMPORARY ROUTE TO ACCESS THE CAMPSITE.

CHOBE NATIONAL PARK IS DRY, BUT RUTTED AND BUMPY ALONG THE MABABE DEPRESSION;

Shorobe to South Gate:

From Shorobe to Mawana Vet fence is very corrugated and bumpy at the moment. Mawana to South Gate is bumpy and a few puddles still here and there.

Mawana Vet Fence to Mababe Village:

Dry, Very bumpy. Deep holes here and there, bad washouts and corrugations. The 1st 15km probably the worst with big holes and washouts.

South Gate to 3rd Bridge:

Drying out and is open again most of the way. They are looking at making a temporary road to access 3rd Bridge campsite

3rd bridge to Xakanaxa:

The 3rd Bridge is still broken so one cannot cross at the moment. You have to go via South Gate.

South Gate to Xakanaxa:

 A few puddles here and there. Drying out. bumpy

South Gate to Khwai (North Gate):

Drying out. Bumpy and dry

 

Xakanaxa to Khwai:

Road Closed. You have to go via South Gate.

Khwai to Mababe Gate:

The road through Khwai village is drying out and one can pass through again. From the white concrete bridge to the Mababe gate turn off the road is in pretty good shape. A few small potholes and a few corrugations.

Mababe Gate to Savuti:

The Mababe Depression also drying out, a lot of ruts and bumps but fine to drive through. Use the Sand Ridge road and NOT the Marsh road.

Savuti to Kachikau:

A few bumps and getting sandy in patches, but fine throughout the route.

DECEMBER WE HAD 241MM,

JANURY WE HAD 242MM,

FEBRUARY WE HAVE HAD 150MM FROM 1-14th.

THE ROADS ARE WET, MUDDY AND SOME PLACES IMPASSABLE.

THE CENTRAL KALAHARI GAME RESERVE IS VERY WET AND THEY ARE RECOMMENDING THAT YOU TRAVEL THERE WITH AT LEAST TWO VEHICLES.

NXAI PAN AND MAKGADIKGADI NATIONAL PARKS ARE ALSO VERY WET AND SHOULD BE DRIVEN WITH CARE.

MOREMI GAME RESERVE IS WET AND HAS A LOT OF STANDING WATER. THEY MOST OF THE ROUTES ARE WET AND IMAPASSABLE. DRIVE WITH CAUTION. THEY RECOMMENDING YOU TRAVEL WITH AT LEAST TWO VEHICLES.

3RD BRIDGE CAMPSITE IS CLOSED.

NORTH GATE CAMPSITE (KHWAI) IS CLOSED.

CHOBE NATIONAL PARK IS WET AND MUDDY ALONG THE MABABE DEPRESSION; TAKE CARE WITH THE BLACK MUD (COTTON SOIL).

THERE IS A LOT OF TALL GRASS THIS YEAR AND SO PLEASE CHECK YOUR VEHICLE REGULARLY FOR GRASS SEEDS. SOME VEHICLES HAVE BEEM OVERHEATING.  THE SEED NETS ARE FILLING UP QUICKLY IN PLACES.

It as graded at the end of last year. There are a few small washouts to look out for. Not bad in general.

South Gate to 3rd Bridge:

There is a lot of standing water and Mud at the moment; they are thinking of closing this route. Drive with care.

3rd bridge to Xakanaxa:

The 3rd Bridge is broken so one cannot cross at the moment. You have to go via South Gate.

 

South Gate to Xakanaxa:

 Standing water, muddy and slippery, drive with care.

South Gate to Khwai (North Gate):

Wet and muddy, drive with care. They are trying to close this road aswell.

Xakanaxa to Khwai:

Road Closed. You have to go via South Gate.

Khwai to Mababe Gate:

A few small washouts and puddles.

3rd bridge to Xakanaxa:

The sand is nicely compacted from all the rain. A few mud holes and standing water between 4th bridge and Xakanaxa.

 

South Gate to Xakanaxa:

 Standing water, a bit muddy and slippery about 10km after South Gate but ok.

South Gate to Khwai (North Gate):

Wet and muddy for the first 10km, then wet the rest of the way.

Xakanaxa to Khwai:

From the turn off on the Xakanaxa/South gate road to Khwai is quite wet and muddy in places. Double check with the Game Scouts at Xakanaxa Gate or North Gate before using this route. They haven’t closed it this year.

Khwai to Mababe Gate:

Not bad. A few small washouts and puddles.

Mababe Gate to Savuti:

The Mababe Depression is wet and muddy. Use the Sand Ridge road and NOT the Marsh road.

Savuti to Kachikau:

There are some big puddles on the section to Ghoha Gate, from Ghoha gate to Kachikau there are a few small puddles but nothing serious.
